Gustaf-GuardTM Measurements
Gustaf-Guard devices are constructed from durable 1/8-inch thick, 1-1/2-inch wide steel bar stock, featuring two main components: a vertical leg designed to snugly fit into a hollow log stop, and a horizontal arm that extends outward from the log stop, away from the sawmill bed. The vertical leg’s long dimension ranges from approximately 4 to 5 inches. The length of the horizontal arm varies based on the sawmill model: the 122 device is approximately 6-1/4 inches long, the 126 device is around 5-3/4 inches, and the 130 device is roughly 4-3/4 inches. For compatibility verification, measure your sawmill as follows:
- Set the sawmill blade at a 2-inch height above the top surface of the sawmill bed bunks (see photo).
- Place a long log stop tube, with the beveled end facing up, into the log stop bracket nearest to the sawmill carriage. Orientate the logstop so that the high point of the tube bevel is to the inside (closest to where a log would sit on the sawmill bed)
- Adjust the log stop’s height to 1-1/2 inches above the sawmill bed bunks.
- This adjustment positions the sawmill blade to be 1/2 inch above the top of the log stop.
- Move the sawmill carriage along the bed rails until the blade is slightly before but not directly over the log stop.
- Measure horizontally from the inner edge of the log stop (the side that would face a log on the sawmill bed) to the nearest point on the sawmill drive wheel door.
Utilize the above provided measurements for the horizontal arm to verify the appropriate size of Gustaf-Guard for your sawmill. Choose a horizontal arm that is longer than the measurement in step 6 above.
